Washington Public Ports Association Recognizes Port of Moses Lake as 2024 Port of the Year

Moses Lake, WA - December 16, 2024: The Port of Moses Lake is pleased to announce its recognition as the 2024 Port of the Year by the Washington Public Ports Association (WPPA) during their annual meeting in Bellevue, Washington, Friday.

The Port has been acknowledged for its critical contribution to economic growth in Grant County, particularly for the successful completion of a wastewater expansion, advancements in rail access, and approach to addressing the region's pressing power requirements.

Port Commission President, Kent Jones, accepting the award, said, “A lot of recognition comes to the commission, but to be honest, our staff does all the work. We have a very small staff, and they have been there for a long time. This award recognizes their tremendous efforts.”

Commissioner Stroud Kunkle, also present for the award, said, “This recognition not only highlights the achievements of our Port team but also serves as a testament to the continuous collaboration among stakeholders committed to a shared mission. We extend our sincerest thanks to our esteemed colleagues at the Washington Public Ports Association for this honor and all who played a role in earning it.”

Executive Director, Dan Roach said, “We have a wonderful commission with a lot of experience and steady hand at the helm. Many of our projects have been years in the making, like the railroad project, and it’s finally coming to where we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I want to thank our staff, our commissioners, and I look forward to taking this award back to our team for celebrating with them.”

Public port districts offer a wide range of locally governed services, including marine terminals, barge facilities, industrial development, marinas, airports, railroads, and tourism promotion.

Port of Moses Lake Commission Approves 2025 Budget

Moses Lake, WA - November 25, 2024: The Port of Moses Lake Commission is pleased to announce the unanimous approval of the 2025 budget for $17,176,157. The Port of Moses Lake's 2025 budget strengthens the Port’s role as a key economic engine and demonstrates the Port’s ongoing commitment to sustainable economic development and job creation for the residents of the Port District and beyond.

The Port plans to allocate capital for key capital projects slated for 2025. These projects will be paid for through grants, revenue bonds, tax dollars, and surplus cash. The Port does not plan to borrow money for these projects, leaving borrowing capacity unchanged.

Stroud Kunkle, Port Commission District Two, said, "As a key component of the Port's financial strategy, we have increased our bank balances over the past few years, earning interest at favorable rates. This positions us to deploy capital wisely when the time is right."

Projects carried over from 2024 include the west airport apron rehabilitation, equipment shed midfield of the airport, a community development sidewalk, and bringing the rail project to completion. Projects for 2025 include an electric car charging station, southwest hanger development utility loop, and final design for upcoming reconstruction of Taxiway G.

Darrin Jackson, Port Commission District One, said, "This budget not only supports our mission for 2025, but also emphasizes our commitment to completing the rail project, a project that will enhance connectivity, facilitate smoother transportation of goods, and boost local businesses in the Port District."

Once adopted by the commission, the Port budget becomes the work plan to be accomplished during the next calendar year. The annual operating and capital budgets are a forecast of expected resources and the purposeful distribution of those resources.

Kent Jones, Port Commission District Three and current Commission President, said, "A significant amount of effort was dedicated to crafting this budget to ensure continued integrity and management of port funds and responsibilities. Our sincerest appreciation to the exceptional team of professionals here, committed to preserving the Port District's legacy and role in ongoing economic development."

Port of Moses Lake Industrial Wastewater Facility Upgrade Complete

Moses Lake, WA - October 15, 2024: The Port of Moses Lake is pleased to report the recent completion of significant upgrades to its wastewater system allowing it to handle up to one million gallons a day, more than double the original design capacity. Improvements include the construction of a new 70-million-gallon storage lagoon and a new supplemental watering well to aide in the treatment process. The upgraded wastewater system is already operational with several businesses located on the east side of the Grant County International Airport utilizing this key asset.

The Port’s original wastewater treatment facility was designed and constructed 1999. Over the past 24 years, this wastewater facility aided the Port in attracting Chemi-Con, Moses Lake Industries, AstaReal, Okanagan Fruit, Genie, SGL, as well as Fire Attack Base, a division of the U.S. Forestry Service. After nearing capacity several years ago, the Port Commission proactively authorized the wastewater treatment facility expansion to ensure that existing port clients have ample access for current and future operational needs, while also attracting new business potential to the Port.

Executive Director Dan Roach said, “The decision to expand our wastewater treatment facility demonstrates the wise foresight of our commission, and our sincerest thanks to our amazing team at the Port for bringing this project to completion. Moving forward, we are excited to see how this expansion will benefit our current port tenants as well as future development endeavors.”

Port of Moses Lake talks jobs with US Congressman Dan Newhouse

Port of Moses Lake Commissioner Chair Kent Jones met with Congressman Newhouse this week to discuss job creation in Moses Lake and surrounding areas.

“The Port is our community’s economic engine. Working with key partners to address challenges is essential to continue providing good paying jobs,” Jones said.

Jones and Newhouse discussed several issues, including an update on new and existing businesses, the fight to save the dams, energy scarcity, the Wheeler Road rail project, wastewater treatment facilities and future plans for the Port.

One of the most pressing issues on a local, state and national level is the lack of power. “No one anticipated the enormous increase in power demands, and now we’re in a crisis. Businesses, including globally recognized companies, are already being turned away in Grant County. We appreciate the help on the federal level to maintain the dams that provide us with 100% clean energy,” said Jones.

Jones shared with Newhouse the many ways the Port supports economic development including building out infrastructure like wastewater facilities and rail roads, recruiting businesses, negotiating contracts, working with the community, and promoting Moses Lake and Grant County.

For questions, please contact Executive Director, Dan Roach at (509) 771-6231.

New Executive Director

Apr. 8—MOSES LAKE — The Port of Moses Lake has selected Dan Roach as the new Executive Director, port commissioners said at their meeting Monday. Roach served as a Washington state representative from Bonney Lake for 10 years and as a Pierce County commissioner for eight, according to Interim Executive Director Kim DeTrolio. Most recently, he served as the executive director of the Lake Tapps Association. He is also a licensed real estate agent. Roach attended the meeting via online video chat, and said he anticipated a lot of work to be done when he takes the reins Tuesday, April 16. "We've got the fire hose ready (for you to drink from)," said Port Commissioner David "Kent" Jones. Roach developed an appreciation for the Moses Lake area more than 10 years ago, when he worked with then-Reps. Janea Holmquist Newbry and Mike Armstrong on a rail project for the port. Rail is still a priority, Roach said. "A lot of these projects are pretty time-consuming," he said. "A lot of the funding was received way back in '15 or '16, but you've got environmental impact statements and right-of-way and everything else. So it's a long-term project, but we're moving on that one. I'm excited about that." Roach said he was surprised to see how much of the port's capacity filled up relatively recently, and he expects to put in a lot of work on infrastructure to accommodate the growth.
